Structural and Design Icon

Creative Space Architecture

This Mount Maunganui beachfront property was purchased with the intention of updating a piece of iconic local architecture.

While the general form of this building was clean, the materials and junctions had lacked maintenance for a number of years.  The structure was essentially looking tired and not functioning as it should.  Our clients wanted to improve their investment, and create a home that reflected an entirely different vintage.

While iconic and visually appealing from the street, this home had a flow that was somewhat eclectic.  For a building that reflected simple geometry, we felt improvements could be made by simplifying and defining what was there.   This also brought about an opportunity to increase the overall function of the home, fine-tune views, draw from the local environment and reflect that in the architecture.

The main form of the existing structure was cleaned, defined and shaped with the use of high performing acrylic plasters and decorative Laminam tiles.  The main openings and views were improved in a number of locations partly by creating 6m high fully-automated sliders to open and close the main container front and back.  These doors are clad with a punched, marine grade aluminium sheet featuring a Kina pattern that reflects the marine environment.  Decks were added, and the home was painstakingly detailed in every location.

It was always a risk messing with an existing piece of well-known architecture.  However, feedback has been nothing but positive.  People feel we have breathed fresh air into a structure that they love.

Creative Space Architecture is a design agency with a difference.  While we know that our clients come to us for fresh ideas and a new perspective, it is also hugely important to us that the resulting structures perform as they should.

Your home or commercial building should ultimately stand the test of time for many future generations.

Established in 2003, many on our team have extensive on-site building and construction experience. This puts us in a very unique position of being able to ensure our designs and detailing are practical and achievable.
