Matakohe Architecture + Urbanism is a kaupapa Māori design studio based in Te Tai Tokerau, taking a design focussed, community led approach. Rather than acting as artist or author, the team sees its role as skilled facilitator and interpreter, empowering people to shape their own communities. Matakohe supports Māori communities and organisations to progress marae, papakāinga, and whenua development projects, combining cultural and technical expertise to co-create processes grounded in local history, culture, and aspirations.
Working alongside mana whenua on public, civic, commercial, and education projects, the studio helps iwi, hapū, whānau, and mataawaka communities exercise mana motuhake and realise their own vision.
