Young Architects

With more than 50 design awards since 2003, Young Architects in Christchurch stays at the forefront of design excellence.

Originally started as Life Style Architecture in 2003, we’ve recently changed our branding to Young Architects to reflect how our architecture has matured.

This Merivale house has been modelled on a vernacular gable form seen widely throughout Canterbury and Otago, and is is clad in blackened cedar externally.

Timber has also been used internally as well, on the ceilings as well as exposed cedar scissor trusses in the living space.

On this narrow site, Metzger Builders have created two gable forms that make up both the living and bedroom pavillions, which are offset and define the entry and courtyard space.

Our designers have done a great job of creating an executive home, while maintaining a single gable on this very narrow site.

The use of braces and straps on trusses introduces a strong graphic element, and the roofline adds a shadowing element to the look and feel.   They also give the home a strong sense of volume and depth.

Director Greg Young is an award-winning architect, and has been involved in over 20 successful NZIA and ADNZ projects.  The establishment of Young Architects (initially Life Style Architecture) was a progression of his design career, after leaving one of New Zealand’s most prominent architectural firms.
