Another Top 100 build – these gems are hard to find, and making this level at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards is a huge achievement.
This four-bedroom holiday home from Beck Building was made to suit several generations.
The property also had to make the most of the beautiful Lake Taupō and mountain views, accommodate a large boat and provide as much space as site restrictions would allow.
A clever solution was found – a private courtyard with the walls of a Z-shaped house running around two sides. The home is split into two wings, with a link in between. Living spaces are in the pavilion with glazed walls to both the north and south, while the bedrooms, bunkroom and garage form the other wing.
Views to the south can be enjoyed from the protection of the northern courtyard; screens with intertwined planting define the pavilion as well as provide shade and privacy.
Design decisions, such as double-glazing, LED lighting, cross-ventilation, house orientation and the use of above-minimum standard insulation were made with sustainability in mind.
From an aesthetic point of view, the screening, oiled cedar and grounding to the site through landscaping and materials, has resulted in a sophisticated holiday home.
Also the regional category winner for Bay of Plenty/Central Plateau, New Home ($1 Million – $1.5 million), this Kinloch bach was designed by Neil Fenwick Architects.
Despite being constrained by budget and tight site limitations, the end result was a sophisticated and beautifully-crafted bach. We’re especially taken by how the oiled cedar cladding and screening meld the build and the landscaping, expressing both order and organic growth
