There’s a new construction company on the horizon in the Waikato, that is branching out from renovations and extensions into home building packages as well.
New Horizon Construction based in Te Awamutu, is now also trading as Cavalier Homes Waikato, and 2023 is an exciting year for builder/owner JP Liebenberg.
The former South African started out training in New Zealand’s construction industry 15 years ago, and hasn’t looked back.
As a former professional rugby player, who spent years playing in Hawkes Bay with former All Black captain Taine Randall as his coach, JP knew he could bring his strength and determination into the construction world as well.
He and his partner decided to make the move north to the Waikato five years ago to start his own company, and then bought into the Cavalier Homes franchise in 2020 – right in the middle of the Covid pandemic.
It could have all turned pear shaped, but JP said with a bit of grace he was able to turn around his business, and build it up stronger than ever.
Competing with other generational businesses in the area is always challenging, but with his already established construction company gaining a solid reputation with renovations and alterations, adding home building packages puts another string to his bow.
When JP left South Africa in 2008 he knew nothing about building, but spending five years in the United States gave him the inspiration to learn something new.
In New Zealand he completed a free 42-week course with G & H Training in half the time, and then started working for Gemco Construction in Havelock North.
Nowdays he can build anything from a high speculated architectural build right through to your average kiwi home.
But it’s the restoration work that JP loves the most – turning an existing project into something new, “and always having to think outside the box.”
This was particular the case since Covid-19 when homeowners were looking more to change their existing homes to better meet their needs.
But business owners have since learned from the pandemic not to put all of their eggs in one basket, and this was particularly the case with the construction industry.
JP is enjoying the new change of direction with the new home builds and welcomes a chat with any potential clients looking to build.
Cavalier Homes are also specialists when it comes to rebuilding new homes on older sites, and rather than facing the inconvenience of selling your existing home, clients might consider a Knock Down Rebuild instead.

Cavalier Homes will deliver a high-quality solution to meet your budget and dream and take all the stress out of your home renovation process.
“With new houses, you have to cater for that market as well and diversify,” he said.
