Fifty tonnes of schist from Gibbston Valley were shipped to one of the classiest streets in Takapuna for this Cape Cod Home.
Grand and rustic all in one, this house features a triple-pitched roof with luxurious lodge-inspired interior similar to the architecture the owners had seen at Huka Lode, Kauri Cliffs and Millbrook Resort.
They wanted something iconic, and after demolishing the existing house, the level of the section was raised by a metre and the sea wall rebuilt.
There is an 180-degree view out to Rangitoto Island from here, and Young and Richards architects designed them a five-bedroom, five bathroom, home with a triple garage and a 9m-high void to soar above the dining area.
The highly technical build, helmed by Dave Swan of Niche Construction, took just 12 months, and the family spent countless hours sourcing materials to bring the vision to life.
These include the seven barn doors crafted from 100-year-old cypress, and the office ceiling lined with barn oak from Oregon.
Schist surrounds the sparkling pool outside, and is built up inside as a large prominent fireplace, while the master bedroom features a handcrafted panelled ceiling. The same timber has been used in the office below as a bedhead wall.
