Highly Acclaimed

North Coromandel Builders

This beach home sits just as comfortably within the landscape as the red shed across the river that inspired it. Built by North Coromandel Builders, this ‘Waipapa House’ is intricately clad in walnut-stained cedar inside and out. The T-shaped plan keeps pace with the sun throughout the day making the communal wing the warm, welcoming heart of this 303sqm home.

The richness of the timber within this part of the house extends into the bedroom wing in the form of a stained Meranti plywood ceiling and kwila flooring, while the corrugate-clad southern bedroom wing provides a cool retreat from the heat of the day.

Four bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms cater for family and friends, and there’s even a rumpus area for spillover during busy
weekends at the beach.

The home also offers windward and leeward outdoor living options, thanks to large overhangs, cedar under-slatted roofing and electric screens. These help to open up and cool the living quarters.

Thanks to black steel-formed fireplaces inside and out there are lounging areas for all seasons. Local builders Luke Mikkelson and Matt Vause teamed up three years ago to bring a wealth of expertise to their new company.

Much of the internal wood working was also carried out by the pair, from the bathroom vanity benchtop (made from kwila), to the bunk beds in the bedroom, all of the shutters on the windows, the opening awnings around the barbecue area and including the bench seat. Luke said they both love working with wood and can turn their hand to many features inside a home – offering a real point of difference to their clients.
