Impeccable Style

Totara Construction

The owners of this Te Puna home overlooking the Kaimai Range and Mount Maunganui have lived on this land for many years, and their new build is a reflection of their story. Totara Construction was privileged to be able to create these empty nesters their dream home, and help them progress from the original farm house they owned for the past 18 years.

The couple in their early 60s brought up all five children here on this 10 acre block, and were keen to design a style of house that was a mixture of their personal taste infused with mid-century vibes.

“The land means a lot to them,” Totara Construction co-owner Grace Saathof said. New York-style loft bricks have been used for the cladding and the large columns around the entrance area, as well as behind the fireplace inside.

The living areas are lined with honey oak engineered timber floors, and the entrance features a long hallway filled with many of their personal treasures, including art work, literature and many household plants.

The track lights in between the exposed beams on the ceiling are another interesting feature, and there is a lovely balance of old with the new throughout the home – including their much loved high quality furniture.

The kitchen is a delightful mixture of walnut coloured malteca cabinetry brightened up with olive green on the inside, and has been finished with top of the range Smeg appliances. Timber veneer lamp shapes complete this earthy look through in the living area, and outside the lap pool is quietly demanding attention.
