Located at the northern end of Auckland’s picturesque Takapuna beach and with uninterrupted, 270 degree views across to Rangitoto Island and beyond, this legacy property was purchased by the owners from family who had enjoyed and recognised its extraordinary position for many years. Originally designed by award–winning architect Jack McKinney over sixteen years ago, the timeless yet contemporary build was in immaculate condition, but the new owners sought a thorough refresh that reflected their own signature style and lifestyle.
Bennett McCallum, Director, Four Corners Construction and his team were bought on board initially to “just remove a couple of walls, but 18 months later we had completed an almost total internal renovation” that they couldn’t be more proud of. Project managing the entirety of the transformation included working with an array of key suppliers and contractors as the refreshed look for the home came to life, including the original architect who was on–hand to assist with the considerable endeavour at several key points along the way.
The Four Corners Construction team were tasked with everything from “stripping almost the entire home back to its internal framing” to shifting significant walls around, and infilling the existing mezzanine floor to add an extra 40m2 of living. This space was transformed into the truly impressive primary suite, which now sports an enviable ensuite with the help of Tomba Tiling and Mirage Plumbing, a high vaulted ceiling and spacious bespoke dressing room. That superlative view is a given, glimpsed through custom floor to ceiling blinds courtesy of Vanda that serve to enhance rather than obstruct.
The entire colour palette of the home is either black or white, with the black ceiling found in the downstairs living space a dramatic triumph after several attempts at complete opacity. The existing rusticated oak floors were still in pristine condition and only required touch ups where walls were removed, while the impressive gourmet’s kitchen was created and fitted by luxury cabinetry manufacturers, DBJ Furniture, with Linear Stone countertops for an added flourish of luxury.
Auckland–based interior designer Veryan Faye came on board to finesse the finer details and help Four Corners tie the whole project together, with the brief of creating an inspired forever home for a new generation. Taking 18 months from start to finish, Four Corners Construction relished the chance to transform an already impressive residence into a perfect fit for the new owners, with one element a particular “wow” moment when it all came together. “We completely reshaped the original stairwell – which had a perfectly straight balustrade – into a beautiful curved piece that quickly became the heart of the home,” says Bennett, with Weldzone Engineering on hand to assist with bringing the curved steel feature come to life.
With its gabled form and stunning surroundings, this design–led home is an effortless mix of luxury and absolute liveability, as well as a testament to the great work of Four Corners Construction and their collective of great suppliers.
