The project featured in this article, is situated on high ranges not far from Cambridge. While this site is picturesque and enjoys panoramic views of the countryside. This design and build was not without it’s challenges.
However builder Ben Shaw and Daniel Cullen from Cullen Keiser Architecture. Worked in skilled harmony to produce an enduring project, that has stood the test of time over the last ten years.
Not surprisingly a home acclaimed for architectural design and craftmanship. Daniel states “during the site visit we noticed the natural gully sloping away from the building platform. This was a great opportunity to cantilever the master bedroom and living areas over the gully, allowing you to enter the tranquillity of the gully”.
One issue they overcome was the lack of morning sun through out the winter months. This was because of the landscape in the Scenic Reserve to the east of the site restricted the sun from shining through. To solve this problem, we designed the home to face Northeast, to cantilever the master bedroom and living areas out over the gully, as though you are floating amongst the gully.
The home comprises of butterfly slopping roof planes enveloped by plywood sheet cladding paired with areas of light. Masonry veneer cladding create harmony between these raw sustainable materials, connecting to the natural surrounds. The home had to be designed to suit the steep contour of the land and carefully placed so that it would not disturb the fauna located around the site.
The building also needed be positioned in a way that would gain maximum solar but give the home access to the incredible views of the surrounding native NZ bush & the Waikato farmlands.
Daniel Cullen and their small boutique team, shared with Ben Shaw a humble pleasure in tackling this project. This home is a stellar example of contemporary architecture using the latest materials and innovation. They both feel incredibly lucky in this industry to be able to be innovative and creative. It’s the greatest feeling to create something and see the reality emerge.
Even better when you see the look of pride and appreciation on an owners face, who you know have achieved the home of their dreams.
