Iconic Renovation

John Mills Architects

This iconic home in Mahina Bay was an award winner in the 1980s and had an extensive renovation 20 years later.

John Mills Architects was commissioned to refit the entire exterior and interior to be reminiscent of a luxury lodge.

There are many hidden surprises with this house.   A panel opens to reveal a secret bookcase door into the dining room.

Built by Scotty’s Construction, we selected the detailed lighting, furnishings and fabrics for all of the living rooms, bedrooms and new bathrooms, as well as the exterior spaces.

With the built in outdoor furniture, flares and island fireplace we created a dramatic entertaining space with the high gable roof framing the bush and harbour views.

The renovation required the assistance of builders, plumbers, tilers, electricians, gas fitters, painters and even curtain makers. John worked closely with everyone involved, ensuring the project would be completed within a six month period and would exceed his client’s expectations.

Floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as skylights soak the living and dining areas in natural light while presenting a stunning view of the trees, ocean and mountains. In the bathroom, small white stones decorate the his-and-her shower, providing a natural contrast against the bathroom’s wooden flooring.

John Mills Architects was started in Wellington in 1990.  We have a distinctive aesthetic that seeks to combine our passion for materials and colour with a desire to create uniquely tailored architecture for the individual or specific organisation.

We endeavour to create architecture that speaks of its sites and surroundings with graces of poetry and personality, unencumbered by blind conformity and dictates of transient fashion.

We work together with clients and builders to craft beautiful forms and engaging spaces that make the heart leap and the soul sing.

Our work has been recognised through our accolades in both the Trends International Design Awards and locally through the NZIA Architecture Awards at a regional level.
