High Above the Coastline

RHJ Builders

This Tutukaka home built by Richard Hilton Jones Builders is something spectactular, and won the 2020 New Zealand Institute of Architects regional award.

Designed by Herbst Architects, and with views to the Poor Knights Islands, the home sits comfortably amongst the surrounding bush.

Made from a natural balance of different building materials, including rammed earth exterior walls and concrete with metal and cedar accents throughout, the design focus is on allowing maximum light to enter the home.

With a bright and relaxed open-plan flow, the home is built in two form connected by a glass walkway to maximise the stunning views in every room.

Clever design and construction came together to provide shading that is not only practical but eye catching, and to prevent the home from overheating in the summer sun.

Rainscreens provide stunning light patterns through the home, and other extra special features include spotted gum flooring and an open fire, and a beautiful in ground outdoor pool.
