Anyone who has taken time to observe New Zealand’s Native Falcon, the Karearea on the wing, know the majesty and sublime beauty these birds possess. It is obvious that the designers of this villa, JTB Architects, also have an understanding of sublime beauty and how to make it a reality for their clients. The villa is aptly named, Falcon Brae, a salute to the bird and the building it inspired.
The magnificent hillside site is situated above the Motueka River and wedged between three National Parks. With an abundance of natural wilderness and panoramic views, this villa demanded an all encompassing design. JTB Architects have carefully considered every aspect of the design and how it interacts with the formidable beauty of the local environment.
The villa is anchored to the land with local Lee Valley rock which acts as an interface between the building and existing rocks. The expansive roof, totalling 1000 square meters, is softened with a curved elliptically steel roof. This required extensive to planning and collaboration with contractors to execute. The final product is a geometric delight and reminds visitors of the soaring wings of a falcon.
Ensuring that the house is a secluded retreat for anyone lucky enough to stay required thoughtful planning. Each room in this 720 square meter residence has framed far reaching views of the opulent wilderness, none more spectacular than the central lounge which boast floor to ceiling glazing and a ceiling height of 5 meters.
The house can be enjoyed in a multitude of ways; reclining beside a swimming pool and spa, sheltering under a covered deck with views that go on forever, or maybe retreating inside to sit beside a roaring fire and enjoying a local wine. Each space offers a different perspective on the land and a opportunity to commune with nature in peace and quiet.
JTB Architects have used their extensive knowledge to create a building that not only becomes a private, luxurious retreat for visitors, but also reflects the phenomenal natural beauty that abounds here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
