Empathetic Concept and Build

DCA Architecture

This cabin stands alone, nestled in a patch of native bush, with punga ferns acting as sentinels and the hustle and bustle of modern day living a distant memory. The simplicity of the design is intentional. This award winning cabin, thoughtfully designed by DCA Architects, distances itself from civilisation and with a pared back footprint, allows nature to dictate.

DCA Architects emphasise the importance of ‘listening first, designing second’. This ensures that the client sits in the centre of the design process. In this case the clients required a structure that considered the spirit of the environment and an assurance that the long term  impact of this building be thoughtfully considered. In response, DCA Architects have integrated Passiv Haus design principles to ensure that it requires minimal energy input, while retaining the highest possible standards of sustainability. The environment has been considered and prioritised in all aspects of this structure.

As a living space, the cabin is divided into three cells. All are separate from each other, attached via a vestibule, encouraging the occupants to move into the outdoor environment as they move from space to space. The integration of the natural world is an essential component of living in this space. The lines between shelter and sanctuary are continually blurred as you move from living, to bed, to bath. In fact the outdoor bath situated at the main entrance clearly states the intention of this home; to revel in this lush, private retreat and offer yourself up to the protection of Tane Māhuta.

It seems DCA Architects have an unique and passionate approach to creating houses that are practical, aesthetically pleasing, while also complimenting what Mother Earth already offers. They describe themselves as not willing to accept the status quo and this clever cabin exemplifies that attitude.
