Beattie McDowell

A stunning mixture of schist both internally and externally was used on this Myross Bush rural property near Invercargill.

Designed by award-winning architects Beattie McDowall, the structure of this home is impressive with its exposed trusses, timber ceilings and window frames.

There is even an internal den completely lined in schist like an original gold miners hut in Central Otago, and overall this house just oozes warmth.

Beattie McDowall is a general architect practice based in Invercargill, offering services to a diverse client base throughout the lower South Island.  We are the latest iteration of a long established Southland business originally formed in 1920.

The practice is an active member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects Inc. (NZIA) and our architects are registered with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB).

The scale and complexity of projects undertaken by Beattie McDowell Architects Ltd ranges from private homes and alterations to major multi-million dollar works.  Areas of expertise include commercial, residential, hospitality, education, care and community work.

We lead project teams and collaborate with others to obtain appropriate specialist input to meet project demands.  We have established a reputation for appropriate, innovative and cost effective design and technical expertise and have won both Regional and National awards.

We approach projects without preconceived notions, taking cues from our client, their brief, other stakeholders, the local climate, natural environment, historical context and cultural environment.  We recognise that each client and their project will have a different set of values, requirements and expectations that will need to be investigated, analysed and understood.  Every project requires a unique and appropriate design solution.

Roger Beattie has over 30 years experience within the field of architecture, both in New Zealand and the UK.  He was raised in rural Southland, and in 2010 he returned with his young family to his home town, as a Director of Beattie McDowell Architects Ltd.
