Starting from the blank canvas of a steep Russell township site, Hatchard Builders tackled every aspect of bringing this challenging build to life, from siteworks to code of compliance.
Encompassing three different types of retaining – timber, block and rock, and laid out over four levels, it required close collaboration with engineers, architects and most of all clients for successful completion.
Built by Hatchard Builders, the owners of this property were turned down by three other builders before they found somebody willing to take on the project, because of the steep driveway and extensive earthworks.
Matt Hatchard accepted the challenge and tackled the hill by firstly building a massive retaining wall around the perimeter, and multi-level blockwork walls up to 5.5m high.
Built using black Linea weatherboards and with unimpeded views over the Bay of Islands, the mezzanine and fourth bedroom have been built above the high-stud garage, and high end Kwila decking finishes off the house perfectly.
Four skylights were also installed in the kitchen, atrium and two bedrooms, to allow natural light to flood in.
When Hatchard Building takes on your building project, you can expect excellence in building work, great collaboration, and communication throughout the project to exceed your expectations.

Here’s what the clients had to say about this challenging build:
(Also featured in Revere Magazine Volume 4): Steve rates Matt’s communication skills and attitude very highly. “I received lots of photos and constant updates, Matt was open and solution-driven and was able to work through any problem. It has definitely met my expectations. Best of all,” says Steve with a smile, “I can see my boat moored in the bay from here.”
