Describing a house designed by Fraser Cameron Architects is difficult. It would be easy to focus on the creative use of raw materials, or maybe the sublime combination of mismatched elements grabs your attention. The multitude of national and regional awards are hard to go past as well, but these aforementioned factors are only present because Fraser Cameron Architects value quality design and understand that a bold approach is required to adapt to client needs and the relationship a house has with it’s natural setting.
The quality of the final product is superb. This speaks to a strong working relationship between Fraser Cameron Architects and an established network of crafts people, suppliers and building contractors. Expectations are set to a high standard and everyone on site understands that they are part of creating something special.
There is a playful, bold approach to using materials. A tiled splashback is reminiscent of tuatara scales, finely crafted geometric frames greet guests in a portico, metallic doors create a vault like aura to a main entrance and a simple garden boardwalk juts out to add an angular detail in the garden. Every aspect of the look and feel, in and out of the house, is thoughtfully considered.
When simplicity is the best fit, Fraser Cameron Architects allow the natural landscape to dominate. Always responding to the lay of the land, creating an interface between the natural world and the fabricated, ensuring nature can be easily accessed and that the human world doesn’t overwhelm. This requires clever and adaptive design. It might be a timber ceiling raking to a peak, paired with blackened concrete walls. Two vastly different materials that compliment each other beautifully.
A house designed by Fraser Cameron Architects is responsive and mercurial, not fitting a style or fashion, rather claiming an identity all of its own.
